Manchester United are pursuing two January signings — Barcelona’s Fermin Lopez and Leeds United striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin — as a mounting injury list forces manager Michael Carrick to seek emergency squad depth ahead of the winter window.

Benjamin Sesko’s persistent shin problem is not expected to resolve until January, leaving United short of a recognised centre-forward. Bryan Mbeumo has been filling the role in the interim, while Joshua Zirkzee has been introduced from the bench in recent weeks. Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo have also missed significant time this season, though Mainoo returned as a substitute in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Chelsea.

Calvert-Lewin, who has scored 20 goals in 50 appearances since joining Leeds last summer, is viewed as a practical solution to the striking shortage. Any deal, however, is complicated by the fierce rivalry between the two clubs. United previously considered a move for the England international during his time at Everton but ultimately passed.

The pursuit of Lopez is a longer-term ambition. United were linked with the 23-year-old last summer, and interest from Old Trafford has persisted, according to the Daily Mail. Lopez has contributed 10 goals and assists across all competitions this season and is seen as a player who could sharpen an attack that has managed just four goals in its last seven matches. Signing him from Barcelona would cost in the region of £70 million, a significant outlay given United’s current financial constraints. Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are also monitoring the Spanish international.

The need for creativity and goals was underlined again at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. United were the better side for stretches of the first half but conceded a poor goal before a penalty put the game beyond them. Carrick acknowledged the performance was uneven, noting the team “found a way of unravelling it second half” after a promising opening period.

Amad Diallo was United’s most dangerous player before hobbling off, and he is now a doubt for Tuesday’s Champions League fixture against AS Roma at Old Trafford. Carrick said he hopes to have the winger available and will look to replicate the positive spells from the Chelsea game against the Serie A side.
