Atletico Madrid weigh painful Giménez sale to fund Alemany's defensive rebuild

Atletico Madrid are bracing for a difficult summer of squad restructuring, with sporting director Mateu Alemany ready to sanction the sale of club captain José María Giménez as part of a wholesale defensive rebuild — a move described by Sport as a ‘painful’ but increasingly likely outcome before the transfer window closes on August 31.

The urgency stems from a troubled defensive campaign. Atletico conceded 81 goals across all competitions last season — 44 in La Liga alone — and Alemany has identified the backline as the priority area for investment. Cuti Romero is understood to be his primary defensive target, but the club’s approach is clear: players must leave before new arrivals can come in.

Lenglet and Giménez the likeliest exits

Of Atletico’s five senior centre-backs, only three are guaranteed continuity heading into next season. David Hancko and Marc Pubill are expected to start, with Robin Le Normand pencilled in as a rotation option. That leaves Clément Lenglet and Giménez as the two most likely to depart.

Lenglet’s exit is considered the more straightforward. The French defender, acquired for just €3m, showed promise during an initial loan spell but has since been undermined by a series of errors. A sale that returns a reasonable profit on that modest outlay would suit Alemany’s plans.

Giménez’s situation carries far greater weight. The Uruguayan captain remains a genuine cult figure among Atletico supporters, but his form has dipped due to injuries and, when fit, Diego Simeone has regularly preferred other options. Sport also note that the Madrid press have reported friction between Giménez and Simeone — a dynamic that could make the club more receptive to a serious offer than supporters might expect.

Ambitious incoming agenda

Alemany is understood to have a busy summer planned beyond the defensive overhaul. Atletico have already opened talks over at least one midfield addition, and funding that operation depends heavily on clearing wages and generating transfer income from the defensive surplus.

Selling a club icon like Giménez would represent the most painful element of that equation, but it appears firmly on the table if the right bid materialises before the window shuts.
