Atletico Madrid set pre-season deadline for Julian Alvarez transfer decision
Atletico Madrid have urged Julian Alvarez to resolve his future before La Liga kicks off in mid-August, with Arsenal, Chelsea, Barcelona and PSG all linked to the Argentine forward. Diego Simeone has publicly suggested Alvarez has already made up his mind.
Atletico Madrid have told Julian Alvarez and interested clubs to finalise any transfer before the new La Liga season begins in mid-August, effectively setting a hard deadline on the 26-year-old’s future at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Spanish journalist Roberto Gomez, speaking on Radio Marca, reported that Atletico have issued a direct warning to Alvarez’s camp: “If you have an offer, make it now. Don’t wait here until August 14th or 15th at midnight.” Arsenal have registered their interest in the World Cup winner ahead of the summer window, with Chelsea, Barcelona and Champions League finalists Paris Saint-Germain also credited with serious intent.
Atletico head coach Diego Simeone has done little to suggest the Argentine will be staying. Asked about Alvarez’s future in a Movistar interview, Simeone was characteristically blunt: “It’s not a question for me, it’s a question for Julian. He’s old enough to know what he’s going to do, and I imagine he’s already made his decision.” In April, Simeone acknowledged the situation more openly, saying: “It’s normal that an extraordinary player like Julian Alvarez is wanted by Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona. It’s normal because he’s very good.”
Alvarez joined Atletico from Manchester City two summers ago for approximately £81.5m and has been a consistent performer, registering 49 goals and 17 assists in 106 appearances across all competitions. Despite that output, Marca report he has already rejected an £8.63m contract extension and has no desire to extend his stay beyond his current deal, which runs until 2030.
The length of that contract complicates any potential departure. Alvarez’s deal contains a £431.6m buyout clause, though Atletico would accept a considerably lower fee if they choose to sanction a sale rather than allow the situation to drag into the season.
According to Marca, Alvarez’s preference is a move to Barcelona, where Hansi Flick has overseen a promising rebuild. However, the Catalan club’s well-documented financial constraints make a deal for a player of Alvarez’s market value difficult to structure, leaving the door open for Arsenal and other suitors to press their case before Atletico’s self-imposed deadline arrives.
