Aston Villa have been sanctioned by UEFA following their Europa League final triumph, with European football’s governing body issuing a suspended one-match ban on away ticket sales and an £8,600 fine after supporters displayed a discriminatory banner during the 3-0 win over Freiburg in Istanbul in May.

The ban, which would have applied to Villa’s first Champions League away fixture next season, is suspended for a two-year probationary period from the date of the decision. Should a similar offence occur within that window, the ban will be triggered automatically.

In its ruling, UEFA stated that “the ban from selling tickets to its away supporters is suspended for a probationary period of two years, starting from the date of the present decision.” UEFA regulations require match organisers to prevent provocative actions by spectators, explicitly listing “provocative banners or flags” and “racist behaviour” among prohibited conduct.

Villa’s victory over Freiburg — sealed by goals from Youri Tielemans, Morgan Rogers and Emi Buendia — delivered the club’s first European trophy in 44 years. It was also a fifth Europa League title for manager Unai Emery, who previously won the competition with Sevilla and Villarreal.

The win confirmed Villa’s place in next season’s Champions League, a competition they had already qualified for through their Premier League finish. Emery will be leading the club into Europe’s top club competition for the second consecutive season; last time out, they were eliminated in the quarter-finals by eventual champions PSG, though their campaign included a memorable group-stage victory over Bayern Munich.

Villa are not the only club to face UEFA action stemming from recent finals. PSG have been fined €80,000 (approximately £69,000) and handed a similarly suspended away-ticket ban after their supporters lit fireworks during the Champions League final win over Arsenal.
