Arteta open to Dowman loan as Arsenal monitor 17-year-old Austrian midfielder Weinhandl

Mikel Arteta has left the door open for Arsenal prodigy Max Dowman to leave on loan before the end of the season, though the club will only pursue such a move if they can find a destination that genuinely aids his development.

Dowman, who does not turn 17 until December, has been one of the breakout stories of Arsenal’s early campaign. He scored his first Premier League goal last season and followed it up with his first senior brace in a Carabao Cup win at Ipswich, accelerating the conversation about how best to manage his minutes.

Arteta addressed the situation ahead of Saturday’s trip to Brighton, drawing a parallel with the loan pathway previously used for fellow youngster Ethan Nwaneri. “We will evaluate every six months where we are and what is the best thing for him to do and then make the right decision,” the Arsenal manager said. “It depends on a lot of factors — what he needs, and what the team needs as well, the availability we have in the squad, the minutes that he is playing and the qualities of those minutes. We have to be open, but now the focus is to be here and to impact the team.”

BBC Sport reported that a loan in the second half of the season has not been ruled out, with the club’s priority being to identify a club capable of providing the right environment for Dowman’s progression rather than simply guaranteeing him game time.

Separately, Arsenal have been linked with another teenage talent: Austrian midfielder Luca Weinhandl of Sturm Graz. The 6‘3” 17-year-old has already broken into Sturm’s first team and scored in a Champions League qualifying win over Hearts in July, attracting interest from several top European clubs.

Sturm head coach Fabio Ingolitsch was dismissive of the transfer speculation. “These days, you can put so much information into someone that all sorts of rumours are formed. We couldn’t care less,” he said. “We know what we have in Luca, that he’s a highly talented player who, at 17, plays as if he’s already played countless [senior games].”

Weinhandl does not turn 18 until January, meaning any potential move would likely hinge on the winter transfer window at the earliest. Arsenal return from the international break with two significant home fixtures — a Premier League match against Leeds and a Champions League tie against Lille — before a trip to Bayern Munich in October.
