Jay Bothroyd has argued that 15-year-old Manchester United academy forward JJ Gabriel could thrive in La Liga rather than the Premier League, as reports of the teenager’s transfer request and ongoing talks with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich continue to dominate headlines in Greater Manchester.

Speaking on Piers Morgan’s Sports Uncensored alongside Simon Jordan and Andros Townsend, the former Coventry City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and QPR striker pointed to Gabriel’s build as a key factor in his potential development path. Bothroyd drew comparisons with players who have found the physicality of English football a barrier, suggesting the Spanish top flight could offer a more nurturing environment for a player of Gabriel’s frame.

“At the end of the day, the parents just want what’s best for their son,” Bothroyd said. “And it’s not like they’re particularly saying, ‘I want him to play right now.’ It’s very much like, ‘We just want him to go in the best possible direction.’ When you look at him, his body — we talk about Wirtz and we say, ‘He’s lightweight, he’s not ready for the Premier League, he can’t play there.’” The pundit also referenced the experiences of Wayne Rooney and Max Dowman in the context of physicality demands in English football.

Super agent Ali Barat is understood to have helped facilitate discussions between Gabriel’s family and both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Barcelona have also been linked with the forward, leaving his future at Old Trafford deeply uncertain.

Gabriel had been on the verge of making history at United. Manager Michael Carrick was reportedly planning to include the teenager in the squad for last week’s EFL Cup tie against Brighton and Hove Albion, a debut that would have made him the club’s youngest-ever first-team player. That appearance did not materialise following the transfer request earlier in the week.
