Spain locks in World Cup-winning coach De la Fuente until 2032 to cover home tournament

Spain’s football federation has extended the contract of head coach Luis de la Fuente through 2032, securing the man who delivered the country’s second World Cup title for a cycle that includes three major tournaments.

The Spanish football federation’s board of directors voted unanimously to approve the deal on Monday. The new contract covers the 2028 and 2032 European Championships as well as the 2030 World Cup, which Spain will co-host alongside Morocco and Portugal.

“We are looking for a project built on stability and trust,” federation president Rafael Louzán said. “It is a proposal based on confidence in Luis de la Fuente and the sporting project he leads, spanning a multi-year competitive cycle that includes major tournaments.”

Louzán also underlined De la Fuente’s standing in the national team’s history. “We are talking about the most decorated coach in the national team’s history. After 14 years with us, a long-term future at the federation is something Luis de la Fuente deserves.”

De la Fuente guided Spain to the World Cup title in July, defeating Argentina in the final. The victory extended Spain’s unbeaten run to a record 38 games. Across his 50 matches in charge of the senior squad, he has won 38.

He took over the national team from Luis Enrique following Spain’s round-of-16 elimination to Morocco at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Before stepping up to the senior role, De la Fuente had spent years coaching Spain’s youth sides within the federation setup.

The extension cements a long-term vision at the federation and ensures continuity heading into what promises to be the most consequential stretch in Spanish football in decades, with a home World Cup on the horizon.
