Arsenal have completed the permanent signing of Piero Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen on a long-term contract, triggering their purchase option for an initial £34.45m (€40m) plus up to £5.17m (€6m) in bonuses — the same day Real Madrid’s chief scout was in the stands watching the 24-year-old in action at the World Cup.

Real Madrid’s chief scout Juni Calafat was present at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on June 14 to observe Hincapie as Ecuador faced Ivory Coast. The Ecuadorian had a difficult evening, with Liverpool target Yan Diomande causing him problems down the channel with his pace. Despite that, Arsenal’s position is unambiguous: Hincapie is not for sale.

Both Real Madrid and Barcelona have monitored the left-back in recent months, and Los Blancos are understood to be in the market for a left-sided centre-back following David Alaba’s departure from Jose Mourinho’s squad. Ruben Dias of Manchester City is also among their options. Real Madrid had previously lodged an enquiry regarding Riccardo Calafiori through agent Alessandro Lucci at the start of the window, though that interest was never pursued after they signed Marc Cucurella from Chelsea.

Calafat’s scouting trip was not solely focused on Hincapie. He was also in New Jersey on June 13 to watch Ayyoub Bouaddi — another player Arsenal admire — feature for Morocco in their 1-1 draw with Brazil.

Thursday proved a landmark day for Hincapie on two fronts. His permanent move to Arsenal was announced before he helped Ecuador secure a 2-1 victory over Germany at the MetLife Stadium, booking their place in the Round of 32 of the World Cup.

Hincapie made 41 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal last season following a loan move from Leverkusen, for which the Gunners paid a £5.17m (€6m) fee. Leverkusen will retain a 10 per cent sell-on clause as part of the agreement. The German club confirmed the deal in a statement: “The conditions for the purchase option were met and defender Hincapie will therefore continue his career with the London club in the Premier League in the coming years.”

Arsenal’s recruitment thinking is shaped by a broader positional reshuffle. Myles Lewis-Skelly is expected to move permanently into midfield, meaning Hincapie and Calafiori will be required as centre-back cover alongside Gabriel Magalhaes after a demanding 63-game campaign. Mikel Arteta’s side had also tracked Germany left-back Nathaniel Brown, though he is now set to join Bayern Munich from Eintracht Frankfurt in a £47.35m deal.
