Arsenal seal permanent Hincapié signing as Ecuador defender prepares for World Cup decider
Arsenal have confirmed the permanent signing of Ecuador left back Piero Hincapié from Bayer Leverkusen, completing the deal while the 24-year-old prepares for a crucial World Cup group stage match against Germany.
Arsenal have secured the permanent transfer of Ecuador defender Piero Hincapié, finalising the deal on Thursday as the 24-year-old readies himself for Ecuador’s decisive World Cup group stage clash against Germany.
Hincapié joined Arsenal on a season-long loan from Bayer Leverkusen and met the conditions required to trigger a permanent contract with the English champions. He will officially become an Arsenal player from Wednesday.
The left back made 39 appearances across all competitions for Arsenal last season, largely sharing duties at left back with Riccardo Calafiori. His consistent performances were enough to convince the club to exercise the permanent option embedded in the original loan agreement.
At the World Cup, Hincapié has played every minute of Ecuador’s opening two group fixtures — a 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast and a 0-0 draw with Curaçao. Ecuador now face Germany needing a result to advance from the group stage.
The timing of the announcement is notable: completing a major transfer while a player is mid-tournament reflects both Arsenal’s administrative efficiency and their confidence in Hincapié as a long-term fixture in their squad.
