Former Portuguese footballer Emanuel de Jesus Bonfim Evaristo, known as Manu, died at the age of 43 following a road accident. The news was announced on Sunday, plunging Portuguese football into mourning.
A winger trained at FC Alverca, his first professional club, Manu then played for several renowned Portuguese clubs: Benfica Lisbon, Estrela da Amadora, Maritimo Funchal and Vitoria Setubal. His career also took him to Italy, Greece, Poland, China and Cyprus.
In total, he made 130 appearances in the Portuguese top flight, scoring 13 goals and providing seven assists. It was in Poland, however, that he achieved his greatest honours, winning the national cup twice with Legia Warsaw, in 2011 and 2012.
FC Alverca expressed this weekend “its profound sadness, offering its sincere condolences to his family, friends and all those who shared with him his life and career journey”.
This death comes a year after the death of Diogo Jota, who was also killed in a road accident in Spain.
