Arsenal have moved to the front of the queue for Julian Alvarez after Barcelona’s attempts to sign the Atlético Madrid and Argentina forward hit a standstill, according to reports from Spanish outlet Cadena SER.

The Premier League champions, fresh from ending a six-year trophy drought this season, are preparing a significant summer of investment under owners Kroenke Sports Entertainment. Attacking reinforcements are the priority, with the left-wing position identified as the area most in need of strengthening.

Bukayo Saka remains a guaranteed starter on the right flank, while Viktor Gyökeres and Kai Havertz are competing for the central striking role. That leaves the left side — shared between Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli over the past year — as the most likely landing spot for Alvarez, whose dynamic, mobile profile suits a wide role in Mikel Arteta’s system rather than a traditional centre-forward position.

Sporing director Andrea Berta was reported by TEAMtalk in March to have been “finalising” personal terms with Alvarez’s representatives. Barcelona’s interest has since cooled following Atlético Madrid’s public criticism of their La Liga rivals over the pursuit, and the Catalan club’s recent signing of Anthony Gordon has further complicated their forward planning.

Arvarez is not without other suitors. Paris Saint-Germain are also seriously interested in the 26-year-old, and despite Arsenal offering a clearer path to regular first-team football, the Argentina international is said to be currently unconvinced by the prospect of a move to London.

Arteta is also understood to be weighing other options for the left flank. Morgan Rogers has been identified as an alternative, while Eintracht Frankfurt’s Nathaniel Brown is a name in consideration at left-back as the manager looks to reshape his system — moving Myles Lewis-Skelly into central midfield and deploying Piero Hincapié as a more attacking full-back. That tactical shift would place greater responsibility on the left-winger to cut inside, making the profile of Alvarez or Rogers a natural fit.

Eberechi Eze is also expected to feature more prominently on the left going forward, potentially allowing him to operate alongside captain Martin Odegaard at number ten and creating further opportunities for younger squad members including Ethan Nwaneri.
