Arsenal CEO vows further signings after £110m spend — but only to raise the bar
Richard Garlick has confirmed Arsenal will pursue additional transfers this summer if the right targets emerge, following a £110m outlay on Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis and Piero Hincapie as the Gunners look to defend their Premier League title.
Arsenal chief executive Richard Garlick has pledged that the Premier League champions remain active in the transfer market this summer, but insists any further additions must genuinely elevate the squad rather than simply add depth. The Gunners have already committed around £110m to three signings — midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, winger Christos Tzolis and defender Piero Hincapie — as they bid to retain the title won last season.
“We said at the start of this season we’re not going to stand still and pat ourselves on the back,” Garlick said. “We want to move forward — the best clubs are always moving forward. If the right opportunity arises, then we will look to strengthen in all areas.”
Garlick was candid about the difficulty of operating at the very top of the market, noting that Arsenal’s own success has narrowed the pool of players capable of improving on what they already have. “The bar’s been set winning the Premier League title and getting to the Champions League final. We’re probably fishing in a smaller pool of quality players, and that means it’s tricky to land those players that are going to drive Arsenal forward. But if the right opportunity presents itself, we’ll certainly be exploring it.”
The CEO also outlined the club’s broader philosophy, pointing to a blend of elite acquisitions and academy development as the model going forward. “If we’re able to combine those players that are coming through the academy with some of the best players in the world, then we’ve got every chance of maintaining that success and going beyond what we’ve already achieved.”
Arsenal have been linked with Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr and Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez during the window, though both moves are now considered unlikely. Manager Mikel Arteta has echoed Garlick’s stance, stating the club’s ambition is to be the best in the world and that squad investment must reflect that standard.
With the transfer window open for several more weeks, Arsenal’s activity will depend on whether a target meeting their elevated criteria becomes available.
