Armed suspect hunts near England's World Cup base after Kansas City shooting spree kills one
US police are hunting Oscar Sanchez-Munoz, 22, after a shooting spree in Kansas City left one person dead and four injured — with one incident occurring just 15 minutes from England's training base at Swope Soccer Village.
US police are searching for a suspected gunman in Kansas City after a shooting spree left one person dead and four others injured, with one of the four incidents occurring just 15 minutes from England’s World Cup training base at Swope Soccer Village.
Oscar Sanchez-Munoz, 22, is the subject of a manhunt following the attacks. Officers surrounded a property in Independence during what was described as a stand-off, but after the house caught fire and was extinguished, Sanchez-Munoz was not found inside.
“If you see this individual, please call the TIPS hotline, please call 911 immediately,” Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves said. “We are hot on the trail of this subject and we want to make sure he’s taken into custody as soon as possible.”
Graves sought to reassure the public and tournament organisers, noting the significant law enforcement presence already in place for the World Cup. “We have a lot of law enforcement agencies here in Kansas City not only to keep Kansas City safe but also World Cup events,” she said. “That’s one of the reasons we brought in a lot of outside law enforcement, so we could keep those events safe and make sure we have enough officers to police our city.”
The England squad are travelling between their hotel and the training ground under a heavy police escort. Thomas Tuchel’s side flew back to Kansas City following their 4-2 opening group win over Croatia in Dallas, and are now preparing for their second Group L fixture against Ghana at Boston Stadium on Tuesday night.
A behind-closed-doors friendly is reported to be scheduled for around 5.30pm local time to maintain match sharpness for players who saw limited minutes against Croatia.
