Argentina face a potential FIFA disciplinary investigation after players displayed a politically charged Falklands banner in the immediate aftermath of their 2-1 World Cup semi-final victory over England.

Tottenham Hotspur defenders Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso held up a flag reading “The Malvinas are Argentine” as the squad celebrated in front of their supporters following the comeback win. Las Malvinas is the Argentine name for the Falkland Islands, a British overseas territory in the South Atlantic.

The display may constitute a breach of IFAB regulations, which govern the laws of the game on behalf of FIFA. The rulebook is explicit: “Equipment must not have any political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images.” It adds that “for any offence the player and/or the team will be sanctioned by the competition organiser, national football association or by FIFA.”

On the pitch, Argentina produced a memorable second-half turnaround. Anthony Gordon had broken the deadlock for England, ghosting in front of his marker to give the Three Lions the lead. But Argentina applied relentless pressure and two goals in seven minutes — from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez — extinguished England’s hopes of reaching the final and sent Lionel Messi and his teammates through.

FIFA had not responded to a request for comment at the time of publication. Any formal proceedings would determine whether individual players, the Argentine Football Association, or both could face sanctions under competition rules.
