England’s 2026 World Cup campaign ended in familiar heartbreak as two late goals gave Argentina victory, with Thomas Tuchel’s decision to introduce three defensive substitutes in the final 18 minutes drawing immediate scrutiny.

Ezri Konsa, Dan Burn and Nico O’Reilly were all brought on as England looked to protect Anthony Gordon’s opener, but the Three Lions managed just 12 per cent possession in the period between Gordon’s goal and Enzo Fernandez’s equaliser — a spell that ultimately proved fatal to their tournament.

Tuchel was unapologetic when pressed on whether those changes placed his side under unnecessary pressure. “You can discuss this with a million coaches — I have to make a decision on the pitch,” he said. “I analysed the match and I did it a certain way, so that’s my responsibility. In the moment, no regrets.”

The England head coach was keen to frame the defeat within the broader context of a demanding tournament. “We played one of our better matches, maybe our best match in the circumstances. The team was top — we couldn’t get over the line, but no regrets. We played against strong teams in the group, travelled a lot of miles, played at altitude, played with 10 men, played in the heat, and we overcame every obstacle. We were very close today.”

Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni offered a candid assessment of how his side sensed the shift in momentum once England began to sit deep. “We smelt blood in the water,” Scaloni said. “When you see there’s a vacuum sucking the ball in, you just have to keep going for it.”

Scaloni also acknowledged the emotional weight of the win, comparing it favourably to a previous result against Egypt, while urging his squad to recover quickly ahead of the final. “What happened against Egypt was special, but this was beyond that. We’re a little concerned about what’s happening with the final — everyone has to rest. Tomorrow we will think about what’s next.”

The defeat extends England’s wait for a major tournament triumph, with Tuchel’s side undone in the closing stages despite producing what their manager described as one of their most complete performances of the competition.
