Anthony Taylor, one of England’s most experienced referees, has been appointed to oversee Senegal vs Iraq at World Cup 2026, a match that is likely to be the final game at the tournament for both nations.

Taylor, 47, is a familiar figure to Premier League followers, having operated at the top level of English football for 16 years. He earned his place on FIFA’s international list in 2013 and has since taken charge of a Europa League final. This is his second World Cup, having refereed two group stage matches in Qatar in 2022, where he sent off South Korea manager Paulo Bento following a game against Ghana.

At World Cup 2026, Taylor has already officiated Colombia’s group stage win over Uzbekistan at the Estadio Azteca. He will be assisted by fellow English officials Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn, with Saudi Arabia’s Khalid Al-Turais serving as fourth official.

In the most recent Premier League season, Taylor took charge of 31 matches, issuing 121 yellow cards — an average of nearly four per game — and awarding a penalty roughly once every five matches. He sent off just two players in league action: Moises Caicedo of Chelsea against Arsenal, and Jean-Clair Todibo when West Ham United faced Chelsea.

Both Senegal and Iraq arrive at this fixture without a point from Group E, having each played France and Norway. Senegal require a substantial victory to harbour even a slim hope of reaching the round of 32; Iraq’s task is even more daunting. The match is being played in Toronto.
