Anthony Gordon has left Newcastle United for Barcelona, signing a five-year contract with the Catalan club in a deal reported to be worth £69.3 million. Barcelona confirmed the agreement on their official website, stating that the two clubs had reached terms for Gordon “to become a Blaugrana for the next five seasons.”

The fee, if confirmed, would represent a substantial profit for Newcastle, who signed the 25-year-old from Everton for £45 million in January 2023. Gordon had four years remaining on a long-term contract he signed with the club in 2024, and had attracted interest from Bayern Munich before opting for the Spanish champions — a side he faced three times in last season’s Champions League.

Gordon was a central figure in one of the more significant chapters in Newcastle’s recent history. He contributed to the club ending a 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy in last season’s Carabao Cup final and helped secure a second Champions League campaign in three seasons. His 10 European goals this season — five from the penalty spot — raised his profile considerably across the continent.

His attacking partnership with Alexander Isak had been a cornerstone of Eddie Howe’s system, though Isak himself departed for Liverpool in a controversial £130 million move last summer.

Howe paid tribute to Gordon on the club’s official website: “While we’re disappointed to lose Anthony from our squad, we understand that this is a big opportunity for him. He has been a big part of our success in recent years, and the fact that he developed into an England international during his time at Newcastle United is a testament to the hard work he invested to his development with the support from everyone at the club. He leaves with our best wishes, and I am confident that he will go onto be a success, both with Barcelona and the national team at this year’s World Cup.”

Gordon will first focus on England’s World Cup campaign before beginning life in LaLiga. His arrival at the Nou Camp also adds uncertainty to the future of on-loan Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford, whose permanent transfer clause is set to expire next month.
