Anthony Gordon has completed a move from Newcastle United to Barcelona for £70 million, with the England winger signing a five-year contract at the Nou Camp. Both clubs released official statements confirming the deal, and Gordon was unveiled to supporters on Friday after arriving at the club’s headquarters earlier that day wearing a navy suit.

Barcelona will pay the fee in instalments spread across the duration of Gordon’s contract. Newcastle will also receive a percentage of any future sale — a structure similar to the arrangement Everton hold on Gordon, which entitles them to 15 per cent of the transfer fee.

Bayern Munich had been considered the frontrunners for Gordon’s signature in recent weeks, but Barcelona outbid the German club by £10 million. Bayern were unwilling to enter a bidding war, allowing the Spanish side to secure the deal.

An announcement was initially delayed due to paperwork complications, according to Spanish journalist Alfredo Martinez, though there was reported to be no risk of the transfer collapsing.

Newcastle are already moving to address the gap left by Gordon’s departure. According to The i Paper, the club have made enquiries about several wide attacking options: Lille’s Matias Fernandez-Pardo, Osasuna’s Victor Munoz, Lyon’s Malick Fofana, and Ez Abde of Real Betis. Abde has a release clause set at £51 million.

Gordon’s move comes ahead of the upcoming World Cup, where he is expected to be part of the England squad.
