Ruben Amorim’s appointment as AC Milan manager on a three-year deal has introduced a significant complication into Manchester United’s pursuit of winger Rafael Leao, valued at approximately £43 million.

Leao has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for several seasons. The 26-year-old has recorded 145 goal contributions in 291 appearances for the Serie A club and is currently representing Portugal at the World Cup. Reports indicate United have already held direct talks with Leao’s agents, with any potential deal expected to be delayed until the tournament concludes.

Amorim, 41, was sacked by United after 63 games in charge, with his departure described as acrimonious. In his final press conference at Old Trafford, he delivered a pointed statement about the limits placed on his authority. “I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach of Manchester United,” he said. “I know that my name is not Tuchel, it’s not Conte, it’s not Mourinho, but I’m the manager of Manchester United.”

Speaking at his Milan unveiling, Amorim struck a markedly different tone. “There are ambitions that stay with you throughout your career, and coaching AC Milan has always been one of mine,” he said. “I know exactly what this club means: history, prestige and an extraordinary fanbase around the world. It is a challenge I embrace with pride and enthusiasm.”

Leao himself has spoken warmly of United in the past. Asked on the Cernucci podcast whether United were his favourite Premier League club, he replied: “Yeah, of course. I like United because my idol is Cristiano Ronaldo. So back then, I used to watch them. I like Arsenal also.”

That affinity, combined with the reported agent talks, had offered United supporters some encouragement. But with Amorim now installed at Milan and reportedly harbouring grievances toward the United hierarchy, the Portuguese manager could prove a decisive obstacle to any deal for his former club’s primary transfer target.
