Amorim had warned of Eriksen heart precautions before Denmark collapse scare
Ruben Amorim revealed Manchester United carefully monitored Christian Eriksen's heart condition during his time at Old Trafford. The 34-year-old midfielder collapsed during Denmark's friendly against Ukraine on Sunday but regained consciousness quickly, with his pacemaker reported to be functioning correctly.
Christian Eriksen collapsed during the second half of Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine on Sunday, sparking widespread concern — though the Danish FA confirmed the 34-year-old was conscious and doing well, with team physician Morten Boesen reporting his pacemaker appeared to be working as intended.
The incident came nearly five years after Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, which led to him being fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD). He returned to professional football in 2022 with Brentford before earning a move to Manchester United, where he made 107 appearances and won both the FA Cup and League Cup.
Former United manager Ruben Amorim had previously acknowledged the need for caution around Eriksen’s condition. Speaking in February 2025 after the midfielder missed a defeat to Tottenham Hotspur through illness, Amorim said: “Of course, Chris has the heart situation and we have to be really careful with that. It’s nothing about the heart! I’m just saying the heart rate has to be controlled because he has a fever.”
Boesen offered a measured assessment after Sunday’s scare. “Christian walked off the field on his own. As I see it, the pacemaker is working as it should,” he said. “He was briefly unconscious but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him. He will now undergo further tests at the hospital to determine what caused the incident. Christian is doing well, and he asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them that he was okay.”
Eriksen left United when his contract expired in 2025 and signed for German side Wolfsburg, going on to make 34 club appearances this season. Denmark were leading 2-1 at the time of the incident, with Patrick Dorgu and Joakim Maehle having put the hosts ahead before Viktor Tsygankov equalised for Ukraine. The match was subsequently abandoned.
Manchester United issued a statement saying the club was encouraged by the update from the Danish FA and sending their support to Eriksen.
