Amorim emerges as AC Milan target after Allegri sacked for Champions League failure
AC Milan have dismissed Max Allegri following a collapse that cost them Champions League football for a second consecutive season, with Ruben Amorim, Oliver Glasner, and Matthias Jaissle among the candidates to replace him.
AC Milan have sacked Max Allegri and identified Ruben Amorim as one of several managerial candidates, after a catastrophic end to their Serie A season left the club in the Europa League for a second year running.
Amorim, who was relieved of his duties at Manchester United in January after an underwhelming spell at Old Trafford, has been out of work for six months. Before his move to England, the Portuguese coach built a strong reputation at Sporting Lisbon, where he won multiple titles. Milan are reportedly preparing to make contact with him as part of a broader search.
Alongside Amorim, the San Siro hierarchy are monitoring Oliver Glasner, who recently departed Crystal Palace when his contract expired. The Austrian leaves Selhurst Park as the club’s most decorated manager in history, having won three trophies — including the UEFA Conference League title — during his tenure. His record ensures he will attract significant interest from multiple clubs.
The third name on Milan’s reported shortlist is Matthias Jaissle, currently managing Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia. The German coach won back-to-back league titles with Red Bull Salzburg before moving to the Middle East, where he has since claimed the Saudi Cup and the AFC Champions League Elite on two occasions.
Milan’s need for change stems from a dramatic late-season collapse. The club had occupied a top-two position in Serie A for much of the campaign before sliding to fifth, with a 2-1 defeat to Cagliari on the final day proving the decisive blow. Inter Milan, Napoli, Roma, and newly promoted Como all finished above them.
Club owners RedBird Capital issued a pointed statement following the conclusion of the season. “For the majority of this season, we were in the top two positions in Serie A, with a credible shot at competing for the Scudetto,” they said. “The final stretch was completely inconsistent with the performance up to that point, with last night’s disappointing loss in the final game turning the season into an unequivocal failure. It is now time for change.”
Allegri, who won the Serie A title with Milan back in 2011, has paid for the club’s failure to secure Champions League qualification with his job.
