Álvarez rules out Arsenal and PSG to push exclusively for Barcelona move

Julián Álvarez has told Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain he will not join them, with the Atlético Madrid forward's representatives focused solely on engineering a move to Barcelona this summer. The 26-year-old's €500m release clause and a significant gap between what Barcelona can spend and what Atlético will accept remain the central obstacles.

Julián Álvarez has narrowed his transfer options to a single destination, with the Argentine forward’s representatives informing both Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain that Barcelona is his exclusive priority this summer, according to Mundo Deportivo. The 26-year-old had already told Atlético Madrid of his desire to leave at the end of the season, but the decision to formally close the door on two of Europe’s wealthiest clubs marks a significant escalation in a saga that has dominated the summer window.

Álvarez is contracted to Atlético until 2030 and carries a €500m release clause — figures that give Los Colchoneros enormous structural leverage regardless of the player’s stated preference. Atlético rejected a formal €150m bid from Real Madrid earlier in 2026, publicly citing that clause as justification. However, Marca reported in late May that the club might consider an offer in the region of €150m given indications that Álvarez had declined a contract renewal, suggesting their position may be softening from the €200m figure Cadena SER reported they quoted Barcelona in February.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco have identified Álvarez as their primary striker target, viewing him as the long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski. Internal planning at Camp Nou is built around a financial package of €120m to €130m including bonuses — a figure some club sources describe as just about achievable within LaLiga’s financial controls, though it still falls short of Atlético’s reported asking price.

ESPN analyst Gabriele Marcotti has noted that Atlético retain the stronger negotiating position despite the player’s public stance. Álvarez’s decision to rule out Arsenal and PSG while those clubs still held live interest signals genuine commitment to the Barcelona project rather than a tactical posture, but it also removes the competitive bidding pressure that might have forced Atlético’s hand.

The gap between what Barcelona can structure and what Atlético will accept remains the defining obstacle. With Álvarez under contract until 2030 and the Spanish club having already demonstrated a willingness to reject nine-figure bids, any resolution will require either a significant upward move from Barcelona or a further softening of Atlético’s valuation — neither of which appears imminent.
