Allegri set to replace Conte at Napoli as McTominay and Hojlund face new era
Massimiliano Allegri has reportedly agreed a two-year deal to take charge at Napoli following Antonio Conte's departure, bringing a new managerial era for former Manchester United pair Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund.
Massimiliano Allegri is set to become Napoli’s next head coach after agreeing a two-year deal to succeed Antonio Conte at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, according to reports — a change that directly affects former Manchester United duo Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund.
Allegri, 58, was recently sacked by AC Milan after the club failed to qualify for the Champions League, but faces only a brief spell out of management before returning to Serie A. His appointment has not been universally welcomed by Napoli supporters, with some Gli Azzurri fans launching an online campaign to protest the decision, arguing that Allegri’s managerial profile does not align with the club’s vision. His last Serie A title came with Juventus in 2018.
McTominay has been one of the standout performers in Serie A since joining Napoli from United in 2024, playing a key role in the club’s title triumph in his debut season. That form has attracted Premier League interest, and Conte’s exit is likely to intensify speculation over his future.
Hojlund spent last season on loan at Napoli but was unable to help the club defend their Serie A crown, with the side finishing second — 11 points behind champions Inter Milan. Despite that, his temporary move is set to become permanent for £38 million, triggered by an obligation-to-buy clause agreed with United that was activated when Napoli qualified for the Champions League. The deal has not yet been formally confirmed, but Hojlund is expected to complete the transfer in the coming weeks.
Allegri’s arrival is not expected to affect the terms of Hojlund’s permanent move. Both players will now begin pre-season preparations under a new manager as Napoli look to mount a stronger title challenge in 2025-26.
