Alexi Lalas stuns Thierry Henry with live on-air swear word during World Cup coverage
FOX Sports pundit Alexi Lalas dropped an X-rated British slur on live television during FIFA World Cup studio coverage, leaving co-hosts Thierry Henry, Rebecca Lowe and Zlatan Ibrahimovic visibly shocked.
Alexi Lalas caused an on-air moment that quickly went viral after swearing live during FOX Sports’ FIFA World Cup studio coverage at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, leaving co-hosts Thierry Henry, Rebecca Lowe and Zlatan Ibrahimovic visibly stunned.
The incident unfolded when Lowe invited the panel to discuss James Corden, who had been pictured wearing a full Team USA training kit in promotional material for his World Cup show. Lalas responded without hesitation, asking whether Corden was what the British call a “full kit w*” — a term widely understood in the UK but largely unknown to American audiences.
The reaction from the rest of the panel was immediate. Henry, visibly taken aback, turned to the group and asked, “Did he just say that?” Zlatan Ibrahimovic muttered a quiet “Woah,” while Lowe moved quickly to ease the tension. “Lucky we’re on American television,” she said, “because the ‘W’ word on British TV, uh-uh.”
Realising the impact of his words, Lalas attempted to clarify his intent, explaining that he was simply commenting on Corden’s head-to-toe kit appearance in the advertisements. “He’s wearing that thing, he’s all dressed up and ready to go,” he said.
The clip spread rapidly on social media, drawing a wide range of reactions. Some viewers mocked the stunned expressions of Lalas’ co-hosts, with one user writing that his reaction “looks like the thumbnail on a YouTube slop AI video.” Others noted that the panel did little to help Lalas in the moment, with one commenter observing that his co-hosts “totally threw him under the bus.”
Not everyone saw it as a serious gaffe. Several American viewers pointed out that the word carries no offensive weight in the United States, with one noting, “W* is not used here in the states. No American watching TV would be offended by it.” Another simply asked, “Wait, you can’t say w*** in the UK?”
The episode drew additional attention to Corden’s World Cup show, which he hosts alongside former England captain Rio Ferdinand and comedian Ian Karmel.
