416 arrested across France as PSG Champions League celebrations turn violent
At least 416 people were arrested across France, including 283 in Paris, after celebrations of PSG's Champions League final victory over Arsenal descended into violence on Saturday night. Rioters vandalised shops, set fires, and attempted to storm a police station in the city's 8th Arrondissement.
At least 416 people were arrested across France on Saturday night after Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League final victory over Arsenal on penalties in Budapest triggered widespread disorder, with French Interior Ministry figures showing 283 of those detained were in the Paris area alone.
Thousands of fans flooded the streets of the French capital following the final whistle, with an estimated 20,000 gathering on the Champs-Élysées. Dozens marched near the Arc de Triomphe, setting off flares and sounding car horns, before celebrations gave way to violence in several locations across the city.
The Paris police prefecture said smaller groups caused disturbances in multiple areas, vandalising shops and setting fires. One police officer was injured during the unrest. By 11pm local time, more than 130 arrests had already been made, with six vehicles and two storefronts reported damaged.
Among the more serious incidents, a group attempted to storm a police station in the upmarket 8th Arrondissement before being dispersed by officers. The main ring road surrounding Paris was briefly blockaded by a crowd, and police also contained approximately 1,000 people who had gathered near the PSG stadium in the 16th Arrondissement, clearing barricades constructed from bicycles. A bakery and a restaurant were also reported damaged.
The scenes drew comparisons to PSG’s first Champions League title win the previous May, when more than 500 arrests were made across France and Paris deployed 8,000 police officers across the city in anticipation of disorder. Saturday’s response, while significant, fell short of that figure in both arrests and the scale of the security operation.
