4-1 defeat at Como: Fernandes attacks staff, Carrick questions players' commitment
Manchester United suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat at Como on Wednesday in the UEFA Champions League league phase, laying bare internal tensions at the club. Captain Bruno Fernandes criticized the coaching staff's tactical choices, while manager Michael Carrick questioned his squad's commitment and engagement.
Manchester United lost 4-1 away at Como on Wednesday evening in the UEFA Champions League league phase, a defeat that exposed the internal tensions simmering at the Manchester club.
Speaking after the match, captain Bruno Fernandes did not spare the coaching staff. “It was a decision from the staff not to press individually,” he lamented. “But sometimes, when you give the ball to these teams too much, they gain confidence and have so many players behind the ball that it forces you to run a lot. And then obviously, when you recover the ball, the legs and the brain struggle to function much more.”
Informed of his captain’s comments, Michael Carrick responded bluntly in his press conference, sidestepping any tactical discussion to point to his players’ lack of commitment. “Whatever system we play and whatever tactics we employ, if you don’t run forward, if you don’t run to get back, you don’t win,” he said sharply. “We can win, we can lose, but the way we managed the match tonight is not acceptable.”
The English manager, whose future at the club is regularly questioned by the British media, also expressed doubts about the dressing room’s level of engagement. “I have to apologize to the supporters. I share their feelings. I’m really angry, but we have to move on and think about what’s next. My whole life revolves around Manchester United. I give everything I can. Do the players invest as much as I do? I’d like to believe so. But what I saw tonight didn’t please me…”
The record makes the situation worse: just two wins in eleven matches across all competitions since the start of the season. Manchester United host Bournemouth on Sunday in the Premier League, a match that already looks like a survival test for both the coaching staff and the dressing room.
