Three defeats in three matches: Lille sinking in the Champions League
Beaten at home by Galatasaray (2-4) in matchday 3 of the Champions League, Lille remains on zero points and sits in the penultimate place. Two years after their historic run in the competition, the northern club appears on the brink of elimination.
Lille suffered their third consecutive defeat in the Champions League on Wednesday evening at Stade Pierre-Mauroy, losing 2-4 to Galatasaray in matchday 3. LOSC remains stuck on zero points and occupies the penultimate place in the standings.
The northerners had seemed capable of reacting: caught off guard early in the match, they equalized and then took the lead shortly before halftime. But the second half turned into a nightmare, with Galatasaray scoring two additional goals to seal the result. A scenario reminiscent of the first two matchdays, marked by defeats against Sporting Lisbon at home and Arsenal away.
Captain Benjamin André made no attempt to downplay the situation after the final whistle. “Once again, it’s a matter of efficiency. These are details but at this level they don’t work. Perhaps tonight we don’t have the level, we have to be honest. Right now, we’re perhaps not at our level and high enough to perform in this competition,” he acknowledged.
Manager Davide Ancelotti pointed to the same recurring flaws while remaining more combative about the prospects. “My feeling is that what we’re doing in the Champions League is not sufficient. We need to change that quickly if we want to have options in this competition. There are matches left, we believe in it, but we need to do something different,” he said, emphasizing errors in key moments: “In the decisive moments of the match, we’re not capable of managing. We concede a goal at the start, before halftime and at the start of the second half. It’s not the first time.”
The contrast with the 2022-2023 season is striking. LOSC had then strung together performances to finish in the top 8 of the league phase and secure direct qualification for the round of 16. This season, the trajectory points toward early elimination, and questions about the real level of the squad are becoming increasingly pressing.
