Gilberto Mora, 17, broke a record standing since the inaugural 1930 World Cup to become the youngest Mexican player to start a World Cup match, helping El Tri to a 3-0 victory over Czechia on Wednesday that sealed a perfect nine-point group stage — a first in Mexican football history.

Mora surpassed the record previously held by Manuel “Chaquetas” Rosas, who was 18 years and 88 days old when he started Mexico’s first-ever World Cup match 95 years ago. The teenager had made only a brief substitute appearance against South Africa before coach Javier Aguirre handed him his first start against the Czechs, and he repaid the faith immediately.

His most decisive contribution came when he threaded a precise pass to Jorge Sanchez, whose collision with the Czech goalkeeper left Julian Quinones to poke home for a 2-0 lead. The move illustrated the fluidity Aguirre had been searching for from a front line that had looked sluggish despite winning its opening two matches.

“For me, it’s a dream come true — it’s what I’ve always worked for,” Mora said after the match. “It hasn’t fully sunk in what I’m achieving, but I’m happy and pleased. We wanted all three wins, and now we have to focus on what’s next. Tough opponents are coming up and we want to keep advancing.”

Former Mexican international Alberto García Aspe, now a pundit, was unequivocal in his assessment. “We kept saying we wanted to see more of him, and the truth is he proved he’s a star,” he said. “The pass for the second goal was impressive.”

Mora’s rise has been rapid even by the standards of his generation. In August 2024, aged 15, he became the youngest player to start and score in the Mexican first division. In January 2025, he became the youngest to debut for the senior national team at 16. The World Cup start is the latest — and most prominent — entry on a record sheet that keeps growing.

He is part of a broader youth movement within El Tri. Midfielder Obed Vargas, 20, and full-back Mateo Chávez, 22 — who scored the opening goal against Czechia — are also competing in their first World Cup. Aguirre has been careful not to frame the group purely as a youth project, however.

“Beyond their age, I have several young players who are thoroughly prepared,” the coach said. “They are a generation of young Mexicans who aren’t afraid of anything. This new generation is the future, and there is a solid foundation for what lies ahead.”

Mexico will face a third-place finisher from another group in the round of 32, with the exact opponent yet to be confirmed. National expectations are rising with each result, with fans daring to dream of surpassing the quarterfinal ceiling El Tri reached as hosts in 1970 and 1986. Mora’s emergence has given Aguirre a welcome selection dilemma — and the rest of the tournament a teenager worth watching.
