Youssouf Fofana's loan to Lyon collapses over Malick Fofana saga

Olympique Lyonnais missed one of its most ambitious transfer coups of the summer: the one-season loan of Youssouf Fofana, French international midfielder at AC Milan, could not be finalized before the Ligue 1 transfer window closed on Tuesday evening at 19:59.

The agreement between the two clubs was for a paid loan with a purchase option set at 12 million euros. But to register the former AS Monaco player, Lyon’s executives first had to lighten their wage bill by selling several players: Ruben Kluivert, Tanner Tessmann, Pavel Sulc and, above all, Malick Fofana. None of these departures materialized in time.

The Malick Fofana case is particularly convoluted. The 21-year-old Belgian winger seemed destined for Crystal Palace — managed by Pierre Sage — on Tuesday afternoon, when Sunderland reversed the situation by offering substantially higher agent commissions. According to journalist Romain Molina, the player’s uncle demanded money for himself and his family, fueling a bidding war between the two English clubs. Crystal Palace ultimately matched Sunderland’s conditions, regaining the player’s favor. In the meantime, Malick Fofana underwent his medical at Lyon without knowing which club he would join, with Premier League clubs having until midnight to complete their transfers.

Youssouf Fofana’s loan failure was not the only setback of the evening for Lyon. The arrival of Keito Nakamura, on loan from Stade de Reims, is also blocked, although an arrival as a replacement player would remain possible. For a club already without Ligue des Champions football this season, deadline day turned into a missed opportunity.
