Rio Ngumoha announced himself on the European stage with two assists as Liverpool came from behind to beat Villarreal 4-3 in the Champions League, the 18-year-old winger becoming the youngest Liverpool player to contribute two assists in a single Champions League game since Michael Owen in 1998 — roughly a decade before Ngumoha was born.

The performance drew immediate praise from teammate Alexis Mac Allister, who was on the receiving end of Ngumoha’s most decisive contribution. “Rio was amazing,” the Argentine midfielder said after the match. The Kop, meanwhile, borrowed a chant associated with historic rivals Manchester United to salute the teenager.

Ngumoha’s second assist was a study in raw athleticism. Receiving the ball with a defender closing in tight, he took a direct first touch and burst clear at pace before squaring for Mac Allister to finish. “The man came tight to me and the ball came, my first touch was direct and then I’m able to run at pace. Macca, good finish,” Ngumoha said. Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola noted that the winger could have gone to ground and won a penalty at that moment — an option that appeared not to cross his mind.

The winger has made no secret of his appetite for direct duels. “Whenever I get the ball and there’s an opportunity to go one-v-one or two-v-one sometimes, by all means I’ll do it,” he said. “I believe in myself to do it.”

Iraola was candid about the full picture, acknowledging that Ngumoha struggled defensively in the first half before improving markedly after the break. “Today he didn’t have an easy game also because they were demanding him defensively and their left-back was attacking a lot,” the manager said. “There was a moment offensively where he was very difficult to stop. If we can put Rio in situations one-v-one, he makes plays, he produces things. Also, endurance-wise he is able to play more and more minutes. We were pushing him a little bit.”

Mac Allister also highlighted Ngumoha’s work off the ball as an area of growth, a detail that underlines how seriously the teenager is taking the tactical demands of first-team football. Liverpool have managed his introduction carefully — Arne Slot was booed by sections of the crowd when he substituted Ngumoha during a Premier League fixture against Chelsea in May — but the club has always been conscious of not overloading a player still adapting to senior competition.

On the evidence of Tuesday night, that patience is beginning to pay dividends at the highest level.
