Wolfsburg have confirmed that Christian Eriksen will begin an individual rehabilitation programme in Denmark following his second on-pitch collapse, which occurred during a friendly international against Ukraine on June 8.

The 34-year-old briefly lost consciousness during the match at Parken Stadium, prompting the abandonment of the game and widespread concern about his health. Wolfsburg issued a statement confirming the arrangements: “Christian Eriksen will shortly begin an individual rehabilitation programme. Following discussions with VfL Managing Director Dieter Hecking, it was decided that the 34-year-old will complete it in his native Denmark. VfL remains in regular contact with Christian and the doctors overseeing his treatment. We continue to wish Christian all the very best with his rehabilitation.”

Eriksen moved quickly to address public concern in the aftermath, posting on Instagram to clarify the nature of the incident. “I want to let everyone know that I am doing well and that I am home with my family,” he wrote. “As you can probably imagine, receiving a shock from my ICD has had a major impact on both me and my family, but I want to reassure everyone that this was a different situation from what happened in 2021.”

He added: “Thanks to their expertise, my ICD did exactly what it was designed to do: protect me when I needed it. For now, my focus is on recovering, spending time with my family, going on vacation, and playing football with my children.”

The June incident was the second major medical episode of Eriksen’s career. He suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s 1-0 defeat to Finland at Euro 2020 on June 12, 2021, requiring CPR on the pitch before a pacemaker was fitted days later. Stringent Serie A regulations barring players with pacemakers from competing led to his departure from Inter Milan. He subsequently rebuilt his career with Brentford from January 2022, then spent three years at Manchester United before joining Wolfsburg on a two-year deal last summer.
