Whitley Bay postpone Northern League fixture after COVID-19 outbreak hits squad
Whitley Bay's Northern League home match against Shildon AFC was called off on Tuesday after a COVID-19 outbreak affected multiple players and staff, with the club announcing the postponement hours before kick-off.
Whitley Bay’s Northern League fixture against Shildon AFC was postponed on Tuesday evening after a COVID-19 outbreak swept through the home club’s squad and staff, leaving them unable to field a side.
The club confirmed the news on X shortly before kick-off, writing: “Tonight’s game at home to Shildon AFC has been called off due to an outbreak of Covid among the Whitley Bay squad and staff. Our thanks to the Northern League for their co-operation and understanding, and apologies to all at Shildon for the short notice.”
Shildon AFC echoed the announcement on their own social media channels, confirming the away fixture had been cancelled for the same reason.
No new date for the rearranged match has yet been confirmed, with both clubs expected to provide further updates in due course.
While COVID-19 postponements were a routine feature of English football during the pandemic years, they have become increasingly rare since the return to normal scheduling. The cancellation drew a mixed response from supporters online. One fan noted the novelty of the situation: “COVID postponements in the Northern Football League in 2026? Six years on and we’re still at it.” Others used the moment to point to what they see as under-reported ongoing circulation of the virus.
Whitley Bay’s next scheduled Northern League fixture is an away trip to Horden CW on Saturday, 7 November.
