Bayern Munich target Liverpool teenager Ngumoha to fill left-wing crisis after Barcola miss
Bayern Munich are eyeing Liverpool's 18-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha as January reinforcement, according to BILD, after missing out on Bradley Barcola and losing Diaz, Gnabry and Musiala to injury.
Bayern Munich have identified Liverpool teenager Rio Ngumoha as a January transfer target, German outlet BILD has reported, with Vincent Kompany’s side scrambling to address a left-wing injury crisis that has left Alphonso Davies filling in as a makeshift winger.
Ngumoha, 18, has made a strong impression at Anfield since arriving at the start of last year, earning first-team minutes under both Arne Slot and current head coach Andoni Iraola. Transfermarkt values the England youth international at €50 million — considerably less than the £106 million Liverpool paid Paris Saint-Germain for Bradley Barcola last summer, a fee that reportedly put Bayern off pursuing the Frenchman themselves.
With Barcola now on Merseyside, Bayern have been left short on the left flank following the departures and injuries of Luis Diaz — sold to Liverpool’s rivals last summer — Serge Gnabry and Jamal Musiala. That mounting absentee list gave Davies his unexpected outing on the left wing against Arsenal in the Champions League.
The reported interest draws a clear parallel with Bayern’s recruitment of Musiala, who was persuaded to move to the Bundesliga from London at the age of 16 and went on to become a full Germany international and the club’s No.10. Ngumoha, similarly London-raised, would represent a low-cost, high-ceiling acquisition in the same mould.
The timing, however, creates a genuine dilemma for Liverpool. The club have invested heavily in wide attacking options this summer — Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Victor Munoz and Barcola can all operate on the left — which may limit Ngumoha’s pathway to regular first-team football under Iraola. That congestion is precisely the argument Bayern are likely to use in any approach.
Whether Liverpool would entertain a January sale of one of their most promising academy products remains to be seen, but the combination of a credible suitor, a clear valuation and a crowded squad makes this a situation the club will need to manage carefully in the coming weeks.
