Fonseca leaves Lyon mid-season to join Sporting Portugal, club receives €5m
Paulo Fonseca has terminated his contract with Olympique Lyonnais, just months after arriving in January 2025, to join Sporting Portugal. Lyon, which publicly regrets the mid-season departure, will receive a €5 million compensation fee.
Paulo Fonseca is leaving Olympique Lyonnais mid-season to join Sporting Portugal, his boyhood club. OL confirmed the departure of the Portuguese manager, who arrived on January 31, 2025 to succeed Pierre Sage, despite his contract running until June 30, 2027.
The Lyon club made no attempt to hide its displeasure. In an official statement, the board described the decision as “unexpected” and regretted it “deeply, all the more so given its timing mid-season”. The club stated it ultimately accepted the separation after determining “it was not in the club’s interest to continue a collaboration that could no longer guarantee the level of total commitment essential to the success of the project”.
Sports director Mathieu Louis-Jean described a genuine shock internally. “When Paulo came to tell me he wanted to leave OL, it was a shock, a surprise. It was last Thursday or Wednesday. I tried to understand the reasons, because we wanted to finish the season with Paulo,” he said. Despite the initial desire to retain the manager until June, the board had to accept the reality of Fonseca’s determination: “He absolutely wanted to leave, to a club that meant a lot to him, his boyhood club.”
Negotiations with Sporting Portugal nonetheless allowed OL to defend its financial interests. The Portuguese club will pay a €5 million compensation fee in exchange for the early termination of the contract. “We had to find a valuation that was good for us, which we managed to do,” Louis-Jean emphasized.
Fonseca, a former manager of Lille and AC Milan, will have spent less than six months on the Lyon bench. Despite the tensions caused by his departure, OL took care to praise “the commitment, the demands and the work accomplished” by the coach since his arrival. The club must now find a successor mid-season, during a period it describes itself as “decisive”.
