Welbeck opens Chelsea account as Xabi Alonso's side ease past Luton 2-0

Danny Welbeck scored his first Chelsea goal and a Hakeem Odoffin own goal completed a comfortable 2-0 Carabao Cup second-round victory over League One Luton at Stamford Bridge, as Xabi Alonso’s side moved through without breaking sweat.

Alonso named a surprisingly strong line-up for the tie, though Enzo Fernandez was absent from the squad entirely — a notable omission with a transfer bid from Manchester City expected imminently. Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was also left out after two errors in Monday’s Premier League win over Fulham, handing a debut to 21-year-old Belgian stopper Mike Penders on the same day Chelsea agreed a deal to sign Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez.

Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers were surprise inclusions, while Estevao came in for his first start of the season and was central to both goals. Welbeck broke the deadlock five minutes into the second half, arriving at the far post to nod home Malo Gusto’s perfectly flighted cross. It was a composed, clinical finish and prompted the first time Alonso’s name was sung by the Stamford Bridge crowd in his new era as head coach.

Chelsea had dominated the first half without finding a way through against an organised Luton side managed by former Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshere. Palmer was denied by a double save from goalkeeper Josh Keeley after a slick exchange with Estevao, and Keeley also pushed away Reece James’ free-kick effort. Rogers came close to marking his home debut with a goal, rattling the underside of the crossbar.

The second goal arrived 12 minutes from time. Estevao skipped past his marker inside the box and crossed low, leaving Odoffin with no option but to turn the ball into the roof of his own net. Palmer had also struck the top of the bar with a curling effort from the edge of the box, and substitute Jamie Gittens hit the post in stoppage time — a third goal would have more accurately reflected Chelsea’s control.

Luton offered little going forward but did threaten briefly when Kasey Palmer tried his luck with a long-range thunderbolt that flew just wide. The result, however, was never seriously in doubt.

Penders’ future, along with that of Sanchez, now looks uncertain with World Cup-winner Martínez set to arrive as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
