Gabriel rejects PSG as Real Madrid emerge as sole suitors for Man United's £8.5m teenager
Manchester United academy forward JJ Gabriel has turned down a move to Paris Saint-Germain and ruled out Bayern Munich, leaving Real Madrid as the only club reportedly willing to meet his £8.5m asking price. The 16-year-old is seeking a move to Spain.
Manchester United academy prospect JJ Gabriel has rejected a transfer proposal from Paris Saint-Germain, with Real Madrid now reportedly the only club willing to pay the £8.5 million required to sign the 16-year-old, according to Spanish publication Sport.
Gabriel’s future at Old Trafford has been in doubt since United received a request to cancel his academy registration last month — a request the club rejected. United have since offered the forward scholarship terms, but his camp appears determined to seek a move abroad.
While United retain the power to block Gabriel from joining another English club, the teenager is eligible to sign for a European side if he holds an EU passport. Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG, and Bayern Munich have all been linked with the youngster, but Sport reports that his options have narrowed significantly in recent weeks.
Gabriel’s representatives turned down PSG’s approach, with the player reportedly viewing a move to France as the wrong environment for his development. A switch to Bayern Munich has also been ruled out, while Barcelona have distanced themselves from the pursuit. The club’s sporting director Deco addressed the speculation in September, stating: “There’s nothing to say about this boy, it’s normal we always have players linked with us. We are not interested in any player in his situation.”
Deco added: “I am not sure what’s happening, and if he’s still a Manchester United player. We are not involved in that.”
Despite Barcelona’s reluctance to enter a costly transfer battle, Sport claims Real Madrid remain firmly in the picture and are currently the only club prepared to meet Gabriel’s valuation across a three-year contract.
The teenager had been on the verge of a first-team debut before his future was thrown into uncertainty, having trained regularly with Michael Carrick’s squad and featured during pre-season. He has since been training away from United’s Carrington base while his situation is resolved.
Gabriel is a youth international for England, though his reported eligibility for an EU passport — through his father, former Republic of Ireland international Joe O’Cearuill — could open the door to a move before his 18th birthday.
