Walker steps up to headline UFC Vegas 124 on nine days' notice after Brady withdraws

Johnny Walker will headline UFC Vegas 124 against Waldo Cortes-Acosta on just nine days' notice after Sean Brady pulled out with a staph infection. A win would propel Walker into the heavyweight Top 10 in only his second fight in the division.

Johnny Walker is headlining UFC Vegas 124 against Waldo Cortes-Acosta at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas on November 7, stepping in on nine days’ notice after the originally scheduled main event collapsed. Sean Brady withdrew from his welterweight bout with Gabriel Bonfim due to a severe staph infection, and with no replacement found for Bonfim, Walker accepted the top-of-card slot at short notice.

The timing is a sharp departure from what Walker had envisioned for his heavyweight transition. Having made his debut in the division only in October — a bonus-winning first-round knockout of Mick Parkin — the former light heavyweight had intended to ease himself in gradually.

“I was thinking to take small steps and go slow in the division,” Walker said at media day ahead of the event. “See how I feel at heavyweight. That was my plan. God had different plans than me. God has better plans for me.”

Walker carries a record of 23-10 with one no-contest into the fight. Cortes-Acosta (17-4) arrives having lost back-to-back bouts to Alexander Volkov and Curtis Blaydes after a three-fight winning streak, but a victory over him would be significant enough to push Walker directly into the heavyweight Top 10 — a remarkable position to reach in just a second divisional appearance.

The matchup now gives UFC Vegas 124 a main event with genuine stakes, even if it was assembled under pressure. For Walker, the accelerated timeline may not have been the plan, but the opportunity to establish himself quickly at heavyweight is one he has clearly chosen to embrace.
