Fury FC featherweight champion Calderon steps in on four days' notice for UFC debut against Bashi
Carlos Calderon, the reigning Fury Fighting Championship featherweight champion, has been signed by the UFC to replace the injured Lucas Brennan against Austin Bashi at UFC Vegas 124 in Las Vegas on Saturday. Brennan was ruled out with a torn ACL.
Carlos Calderon will make his UFC debut on four days’ notice after stepping in to face Austin Bashi in a featherweight bout at UFC Vegas 124 on Saturday at Meta Apex in Las Vegas. The move was reported by MMA journalist Marcel Dorff and comes after Lucas Brennan was forced out of the fight with a torn ACL.
Calderon (11-4, 1 NC) arrives in the UFC on the back of a three-fight winning streak and as the reigning Fury Fighting Championship featherweight champion. He claimed that title against former UFC fighter Damon Jackson in May before successfully defending it against Lorram Esteves in October. Known as “The Chief”, Calderon has compiled a 5-1 record inside Fury FC.
His path to the UFC has not been without setbacks. Calderon fell to Alberto Montes on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2024, a defeat that temporarily stalled his progress. The run of form since then, however, was enough to earn him the emergency call-up.
Opponent Austin Bashi (14-2) arrived in the UFC undefeated after earning his contract on the Contender Series in 2024, but has since struggled at the highest level, losing two of his three octagon appearances. The 25-year-old is coming off a unanimous decision defeat to Jose Delgado and will be looking to arrest that slide against a late-replacement opponent making his promotional debut under significant time pressure.
The short-notice nature of the booking adds an extra layer of intrigue to the matchup. Calderon has had virtually no time to prepare a specific game plan for Bashi, while Bashi’s camp will have had to quickly reassess their preparation for a fighter with a different style and record than Brennan. How both men handle those circumstances at UFC Vegas 124 could prove just as decisive as the action inside the cage.
