Van Dijk's calamitous header gifts Villarreal shock lead inside four minutes at Anfield
Virgil van Dijk completely misjudged a routine header back to Alisson inside four minutes, looping the ball into the path of Georges Mikautadze, who finished coolly to stun Anfield and give Villarreal a shock Champions League lead.
Virgil van Dijk gifted Villarreal a stunning early lead at Anfield in their Champions League clash, completely misjudging a header back to goalkeeper Alisson that fell perfectly for Georges Mikautadze to control and finish past the stranded Liverpool stopper inside four minutes.
With Villarreal lumping the ball forward from the halfway line, the Liverpool captain needed only a simple flick to return possession to Alisson. Instead, Van Dijk got far too much on the ball, inadvertently looping it up and into the path of the Villarreal striker, who took one touch and slotted home with aplomb to silence the home crowd.
Alan Shearer, on commentary, was unsparing in his assessment. “Liverpool’s back four made an absolute mess of it after about 30 or 40 seconds, and Van Dijk has just done exactly the same there. Absolute nightmare from Van Dijk. A clear header. You can see what he’s trying to do. He gets it all wrong. Too much on it.”
Shearer also noted that the error was Van Dijk’s third significant mistake in the opening few minutes of the match, compounding what had already been a nervy start for the home side.
The goal represented a jarring early setback for Liverpool, who had entered the match in strong form in this season’s Champions League. Arne Slot’s side beat Atlético Madrid 2-1 in their league-phase opener before thrashing LASK 6-0 the following week, making them one of the competition’s early pacesetters.
The two clubs are not without history in this competition. Liverpool beat Villarreal across two legs to reach the 2022 Champions League final, eventually lifting the trophy that season. The Spanish side will be hoping to exact some measure of revenge, and Van Dijk’s moment of misfortune has given them the perfect platform to cause an upset on Merseyside.
