Van Dijk dismisses as 'utter nonsense' claims he sabotaged Koeman's World Cup tactics

Virgil van Dijk publicly confronted Dutch media on Thursday, calling reports that he undermined former Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman’s tactical decisions at the 2026 World Cup “utter nonsense” — and insisting the blame for the team’s early exit lies collectively with the squad.

The Netherlands crashed out on penalties to Morocco in the round of 32, a result that prompted van Dijk to consider retiring from international football before new head coach Xavi Hernandez persuaded him to stay. Speaking ahead of the Netherlands’ Nations League clash with Germany — which ended 1-1 — the Liverpool captain turned on a Dutch reporter who had suggested it was van Dijk’s idea to switch to a back five.

“One of your colleagues also said, of course, that it was my idea to switch to playing with a back five,” van Dijk said. “That is utter nonsense. The fact is we simply failed at the World Cup. Those are the hard facts. We didn’t play a good World Cup. It’s not about me. You perform together. You’re a team. Your claim that I destroyed Dutch football after the World Cup — that sort of thing is completely baseless.”

The 35-year-old was equally direct about where tactical authority actually sits. “The plan is devised by the staff,” he said. “Nonsense is being spread so that I look even worse. That happens far too often. I was told that it was my fault we played with five, that Ronald Koeman and I have destroyed Dutch football. The plan worked for 89 minutes, even though it was a bad match.”

The statistics from the Morocco defeat paint a grim picture regardless of who shaped the gameplan. The Netherlands collected seven points from three Group F matches before the knockout stage, but against Morocco they were outplayed in almost every measurable area — recording just 371 passes to their opponents’ 879, generating a mere 0.24 xG against Morocco’s 1.38, and missing three of their spot-kicks against goalkeeper Bono.

Despite the bitterness of that exit, van Dijk said his decision to continue with the national team came quickly once Xavi made contact. “After 10 seconds it was already clear that I would continue,” he said. “What did he say? That I am Virgil van Dijk. It is about trust, appreciation, how important you are for the team.”

Van Dijk was unapologetic about the directness of his response to the Dutch press. “Sometimes things need to be said, right? Otherwise you’re just listening to all the whining. With most of the media, I have zero issues. Never have. When nonsense gets put out into the world, how else am I supposed to deal with that?”
