Manchester City found guilty on 114 of 115 Premier League financial charges

Manchester City have been found guilty on 114 of 115 charges of breaching the Premier League’s financial rules, with sanctions against the club still to be decided following the landmark ruling.

The Premier League first charged City in February 2023 with more than 100 breaches of its financial regulations — allegations the club strenuously denied throughout proceedings that have stretched across eight years. The independent panel has now upheld all but one of the 115 counts brought against them.

In a statement responding to the verdict, a City spokesperson said: “The Premier League process remains ongoing, with significant elements to be completed, and subject to strict confidentiality. As such Manchester City FC’s position remains consistent with the club’s statement of February 2023.”

The club also took aim at the process itself, with the spokesperson adding: “The club has diligently respected due process for eight years on the basis the Premier League board and executive would behave as an independent, impartial and fair-minded regulator, free from partisan influence.”

City are expected to appeal the findings. No sanctions have been announced at this stage, meaning the full consequences of the verdict — which could range from points deductions to fines or, in the most severe scenarios discussed publicly, expulsion from the league — remain unclear.

The case is widely regarded as the most significant disciplinary matter in Premier League history, given the scale of the charges and the profile of the club involved. City have won six Premier League titles since the period covered by the charges began, and the outcome of any appeal and subsequent punishment process is likely to have far-reaching implications for the competition.
