USA XV captain stays defiant after 52-0 loss to Australia A completes series whitewash
Marno Redelinghuys insisted the quality is there despite the USA XV conceding 113 points across two matches against a star-studded Australia A side, with the Eagles now turning their attention to the World Rugby Nations Cup.
The USA XV closed out a chastening two-match home series against Australia A with a 52-0 defeat at Sports Illustrated Stadium in New Jersey on Friday night, six days after falling 61-12 in Nashville — yet captain Marno Redelinghuys refused to write off the squad’s potential ahead of the Rugby World Cup 2027 cycle.
Redelinghuys, a backrower who stepped in for the usual skipper Jason Damm, acknowledged the frustration of failing to score across both fixtures but pointed to missed opportunities rather than a lack of ability. “I know the quality in the team is there, we just need to figure it out and get the best out of us,” he said after the final whistle.
Coach Scott Lawrence named an almost entirely new starting XV for the New Jersey fixture, yet the result mirrored the pattern set in Tennessee. Australia led 33-0 at half-time, with capped Wallabies lock Nick Frost crossing just before the break. Harry McLaughlin-Phillips, a recent Test debutant, was among the second-half try-scorers and was named Player of the Match after a commanding display.
Australia A carried considerable star power across both games, fielding nine capped Wallabies in Nashville and welcoming former NRL player Zac Lomax to representative rugby union for the first time on Friday, lining up at outside centre.
For the USA, the back-to-back heavy defeats arrive at a sensitive moment in their World Cup preparation. The Eagles went unbeaten in the first block of the World Rugby Nations Cup earlier in the year, recording a notable win over Portugal among results against sides also bound for the 2027 tournament in Australia.
Redelinghuys acknowledged the value of playing in front of home crowds despite the scorelines. “Especially in our home country, it’s amazing having these people here — it always helps a little bit out there on the field,” he said.
The USA now return to Nations Cup action, facing Hong Kong China on November 8 before matches against Romania and Georgia. Lawrence and his squad will need to address the defensive and finishing deficiencies exposed by Australia A before those fixtures arrive.
