Mitchell injury clouds Northampton's 28-14 comeback win over Gloucester
England scrum-half Alex Mitchell was forced off after just 21 minutes at Franklin's Gardens on Saturday, casting doubt over his availability for next weekend's Test against Australia. Northampton recovered from 14-0 down to beat Gloucester and claim a bonus point.
England scrum-half Alex Mitchell limped off with an injury after only 21 minutes of Northampton Saints’ 28-14 Gallagher Premiership victory over Gloucester at Franklin’s Gardens on Saturday, raising concerns for head coach Steve Borthwick ahead of next weekend’s Test against Australia at Allianz Stadium. Mitchell was replaced by 20-year-old Jonny Weimann as the Saints dug deep without their first-choice nine.
The match had started disastrously for Northampton. Gloucester, who had entered the weekend sitting top of the Premiership table, tore into their hosts from the first whistle. Centre Max Llewellyn opened the scoring by picking up an offload close to the line, and after George Barton added the conversion, Will Joseph crossed under the posts to give the Cherry and Whites a commanding 14-0 lead inside the opening half-hour.
Gloucester also lost Seb Blake to injury during that period, with Wales hooker Dewi Lake coming on in his place, but the visitors’ momentum barely wavered — until Northampton’s forwards took matters into their own hands. Back-to-back line-out drives produced tries for Tom Pearson and Curtis Langdon, with Anthony Belleau converting both to level the scores at 14-14 heading into the break.
The second half was a tighter affair, but Northampton gradually asserted themselves. Belleau’s long pass released George Hendy for a try on the left, and Rory Hutchinson sealed the bonus point with a clever, footwork-driven finish that left his marker grasping at air. Belleau’s conversion stretched the lead to 28-14.
Gloucester pressed for a losing bonus point in the closing stages but found the Northampton defence unyielding, ending their run at the top of the table. For the defending champions, the result underlined their title credentials — though the fitness of Mitchell will dominate the conversation in the England camp over the coming days.
