United's £80m midfield hunt stalls as Fernandes joins Spurs and Tchouameni pursuit stalls
Manchester United are struggling to identify a Casemiro replacement ahead of the new season. After missing out on Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, the club are now weighing up moves for Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni and Bournemouth's Alex Scott, with Arsenal and Manchester City also circling.
Manchester United head into pre-season training without a solution to their most pressing transfer problem: finding a defensive midfielder to replace Casemiro, whose departure has left a significant void in the centre of the pitch.
Head coach Michael Carrick returns to Carrington with optimism about the squad already assembled, writing in the club’s yearbook that United have “the required standards of talent, commitment and determination to be successful.” But he is equally aware that reinforcements are essential before the Premier League season begins.
The club’s first midfield signing of the summer, Atalanta’s Ederson, is close to completing his medical. However, the Brazilian is not considered a like-for-like Casemiro replacement, and United have been working through a succession of alternatives — each of which has so far slipped away.
Elliot Anderson was the original target, but Nottingham Forest’s £116m valuation ruled him out. Attention then turned to Mateus Fernandes, the Portuguese midfielder whose future at West Ham appeared certain following the Hammers’ relegation. United considered West Ham’s £85m asking price too steep and opted to wait for it to drop — only for Tottenham to step in and meet the fee, ending United’s interest entirely.
With two options exhausted, United are now understood to be monitoring Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott. The Tchouameni pursuit is being approached cautiously while United attempt to establish whether Real Madrid are genuinely willing to sell. Scott, an England international, is seen as a more attainable target, though Bournemouth — buoyed by Europa League qualification — are in no rush to negotiate and are believed to value him at around £80m.
United are not alone in their pursuit of Scott. Arsenal have been linked with the Bournemouth midfielder, and Manchester City — who had previously shown interest in Sandro Tonali before he also joined Tottenham — are reported to be monitoring the situation.
The broader issue for United is one of transfer philosophy. Under Ineos, the club has made a deliberate effort to avoid overpaying for players, a direct response to years of criticism over inflated transfer fees. That discipline has merit, but it has also seen them outmanoeuvred on multiple targets this window, leaving Carrick’s squad short in a key area as pre-season gets underway.
