Jordan Henderson confirmed on Wednesday that surgery on his broken wrist was successful, posting from his hospital bed in Kansas City as England prepare for their World Cup quarter-final against Norway on Saturday.

The 36-year-old Brentford midfielder took to Instagram to thank the medical team who operated on him. “Surgery done! Let’s get ready for the big one on Saturday,” Henderson wrote. “Thank you to all the staff that looked after me at Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute. Especially the three surgeons who carried out the operation: Dr Kenneth P. Unruh, Dr Mark J Winston, Dr Kirk McCullough.”

Henderson suffered the injury in chaotic circumstances after England’s 3-2 victory over Mexico at the Estadio Azteca. He hurdled advertising boards to celebrate with supporters at full time, fell awkwardly, and required oxygen before being stretchered off by medical staff and taken to hospital in Mexico City.

Despite the setback, Henderson has since travelled to Kansas City to rejoin the squad, where he is expected to play a supportive role ahead of the last-eight tie. His presence is considered a significant boost given his standing within the group.

Team-mates were quick to respond to his post. Marcus Rashford and Morgan Rogers left supportive messages in the comments, while his club Brentford wrote: “Speedy recovery Jordan!”

It was Henderson’s second Instagram update since the injury. On Tuesday he had written: “A night to remember that’s for sure! What an incredible performance against all the different challenges. So proud to be a part of this special team. Thanks for all the support, another big one Saturday.” Vice-captain Declan Rice replied simply: “Some man,” with Rogers adding: “What a guy.”

England face Norway in the quarter-final on Saturday.
