Marc Guehi and Nico O’Reilly are walking a disciplinary tightrope ahead of England’s 2026 World Cup quarter-final against Norway on Saturday, with both players one yellow card away from a semi-final suspension following bookings in the dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico.

The Manchester City pair were booked within five minutes of each other in the second half against Mexico. O’Reilly’s caution came amid controversy — Mexico felt the challenge merited a red card — and he was substituted immediately afterwards.

Under FIFA’s revised rules for the 2026 tournament, all yellow cards are wiped after the quarter-final stage, meaning both players would enter a potential semi-final with a clean slate. The immediate concern, however, is staying on the pitch against Norway. Another booking for either player would trigger an automatic one-match ban, ruling them out of the last four.

The disciplinary situation could weigh on Thomas Tuchel’s team selection, particularly given the quality of the opponent. Norway’s attack is led by Erling Haaland, who has scored in every game at the tournament so far. England would become the first side at this World Cup to keep him off the scoresheet if they hold him.

For Guehi, the assignment carries a personal dimension. The centre-back faces a club teammate in Haaland and says he is relishing the contest. “I know he’ll be up for it,” Guehi said. “It’ll be a challenge, but it’s good to see some familiar faces and try and do our best and try and get a win.”

England’s path to the semi-finals runs through one of the most dangerous strikers in the world, and Tuchel will need to balance defensive solidity against the risk of losing key players to suspension before the tournament’s final stages.
