Manchester United are on the verge of signing Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans after triggering his reported £35m release clause, with advanced talks between the clubs accelerating rapidly on Monday. The move came on the same morning United confirmed they are seeking to renegotiate their previously agreed £35m fee for Atalanta’s Ederson, after medical tests raised concerns over a knee injury the Brazilian sustained last season.

Tielemans, 29, made clear to Villa that he wanted the move to Old Trafford once he became aware of United’s interest, and the Belgian had been captaining his country at the World Cup as recently as Friday evening before the situation developed. He has two years remaining on his contract at Villa Park.

The Ederson situation is more complicated. United and Atalanta had agreed an initial £35m fee approximately six weeks ago, but an official announcement was delayed after the 27-year-old received a late call-up to Brazil’s World Cup squad. United denied over the weekend that the deal had collapsed entirely, and the club continue to believe a transfer can be completed — albeit at a revised fee — despite returning to the negotiating table.

In between those two developments, United had also agreed a separate £50m deal to sign Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos, meaning the club are pursuing as many as three midfield reinforcements this summer following Casemiro’s departure at the end of last season.

The flurry of activity underlines the scale of United’s rebuild in the centre of the pitch, with the club moving on multiple fronts simultaneously. Whether all three deals ultimately cross the line — particularly the renegotiated Ederson agreement — remains to be seen, but Monday’s developments confirmed that United’s midfield overhaul is well advanced.
