United open contract talks with Fernandes as Galatasaray interest tests club's resolve
Manchester United have entered negotiations to extend Bruno Fernandes' contract beyond 2027, with the club insisting the captain is not available at any price despite reported interest from Galatasaray.
Manchester United are in talks to extend Bruno Fernandes’ contract after The Athletic reported negotiations are under way over a new deal for the club captain, whose current terms run until 2027 with an option for a further year.
The development comes after United sources told the Manchester Evening News that the 31-year-old Portuguese midfielder is not for sale at any price, following reported interest from Turkish side Galatasaray. It marks a significant shift in the club’s stance toward a player who, just a year ago, felt United were content to let him leave — a sentiment Fernandes addressed candidly in an interview with Maisfutebol.
“I decided to stay, also because of family reasons, but because I genuinely like the club,” Fernandes said. “The conversation with the manager also made me stay. But, from the club’s side, I felt a bit like: ‘If you leave, it’s not so bad for us’. It hurts me a lot. More than hurting, it makes me sad because I’m a player they have nothing to criticise about.”
Fernandes turned down an approach from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal last year and has remained United’s most influential player since joining from Sporting CP in January 2020. Last season he broke the Premier League single-season assist record, finishing with 21 assists and nine goals as United secured a third-place finish and a return to the Champions League under Michael Carrick.
United’s summer transfer activity has so far centred on a midfield rebuild, with Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos both arriving to strengthen a key area of the squad. But securing Fernandes on a long-term deal would represent a different kind of statement — one built on continuity rather than recruitment.
The captain has spoken publicly about his ambition to lead United back to Premier League title contention, and the prospect of a Champions League campaign this season aligns with those goals. With Fernandes central to everything Carrick’s side want to achieve, locking him in beyond his current contract has become arguably the most consequential piece of business the club can complete this window.
