Manchester United have made a formal scholarship offer to teenage winger JJ Gabriel following his exit request in September, a move that significantly alters the terms of any potential transfer away from Old Trafford. Manager Michael Carrick also broke the club’s silence on Manchester City’s guilty verdict, describing the situation as personally difficult.

JJ Gabriel offer made

Gabriel stunned United when he requested to leave last month, triggering interest from Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Under Premier League regulations governing youth players, he would have been free to depart in January for nothing had United failed to table an official scholarship. The Guardian reports that offer has now been made.

The move changes the landscape considerably. Should Gabriel reject the deal and opt for a Premier League club, any interested side must now negotiate directly with United. If no agreement is reached, compensation will be determined by a Professional Football Compensation Committee tribunal, with United expecting to receive at least £3 million plus a 20 per cent sell-on clause.

However, if Gabriel chooses to move to a European club abroad, the compensation fee would drop significantly — meaning United still face the prospect of losing him for as little as £350,000 despite the scholarship offer.

Carrick responds to City charges

During the international break, an independent commission confirmed that Manchester City had been found guilty of 114 of the 115 Premier League charges they faced, covering alleged rule breaches between 2009-10 and 2017-18. City have strongly maintained their innocence and have lodged an appeal.

Carrick, who was part of the United squad that finished second to City in the Premier League on two occasions during that period, acknowledged the personal weight of the verdict.

“Difficult to say in many ways,” Carrick said. “It’s thrown up a lot of questions.” He added that the situation has been “difficult” to process but stressed that his immediate focus remains on Saturday’s home fixture against Tottenham at Old Trafford.

Regarding Spurs and their manager Roberto De Zerbi, Carrick was measured in his assessment, warning against any complacency despite Tottenham’s underwhelming points tally so far this season.

“When you look at the games, they are a very good team with good players,” Carrick said. “They have assembled a squad this summer that is different to what they had. They haven’t had the results they maybe deserve.”

Carrick described the match as “just another game” in the calendar, though both managers are under pressure to deliver a result.
