Mikel Arteta has signed a new three-year contract with Arsenal that will keep him at the club until 2030, extending a tenure that has already delivered a first Premier League title in 22 years and a Champions League final.

The 44-year-old, who joined Arsenal in December 2019, will surpass a decade in charge under the terms of the deal. He used the announcement to signal his ambition for a sustained period of dominance rather than isolated success.

“We know what the level is right now, we know where the standards land, we know what the expectations are,” Arteta said. “But the good thing is the level of enthusiasm, passion and energy is even higher, and that’s what we want to accomplish all together.”

Asked whether he believes there is still more to come from him as a coach, Arteta was unequivocal. “A lot. I know that because that’s generally what I want to do, but I know that the people around me are going to help me evolve as well. We have created people with a drive who constantly think about how we get better — and we need to stay on top as well.”

Arteta also reflected on the personal growth he has experienced since taking the job, crediting the environment built around him. “The biggest gift that I’ve had throughout this period has been the people that are around me, that have been around me to make me feel loved and allow me to enjoy what I do.”

The contract extension comes ahead of a Premier League fixture against Leeds on Saturday, with Arsenal looking to respond to a defeat at Brighton. The squad faces injury concerns heading into the match: Christos Tzolis is ruled out, Kai Havertz is a major doubt, while Ezri Konsa is expected to be fit and Max Dowman has recovered from a knock sustained on England under-19s duty.

Arteta acknowledged the Brighton loss left a mark but insisted it would serve as a motivating lesson. “The pain is still in the tummy and tomorrow we certainly have to play with that,” he said. “It was a lot to learn from that game — how thin the line is from being exceptional to becoming very average, and that’s a reality.”
